Bishop Gorman certainly jumped out to a strong start to its football season.  In its first two games of the season, Gorman has displayed a powerful offense capable of running up the score.  Defensively, Bishop Gorman proved to be solid, starting off the season with a shutout.

The Gaels kicked off their season on August 22 against Brophy College Prep.  The first quarter went 14-0 in Gorman’s favor and the Gaels never looked back from there.  By the final whistle, Gorman led 44-0, opening its season in stellar fashion.

Senior Danny Hong completed eight of twelve passes for 159 yards and a touchdown.  Alize Jones was on the receiving end of the TD, one of his four catches that went for 125 yards.

From there, Gorman’s ground game went to work.  Russell Booze and Jonathan Shumaker spilt four touchdowns evenly.  Booze carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards, and Shumaker seven times for 63 yards.  Biaggio Walsh added on a score in one of his five carries for 35 yards.

On the other side of the ball, sophomore defensive end Haskell Garrett led the Gaels with five tackles and two assists.  Gorman held Brophy to only 192 total yards.

Following its opener up with a game against Servite, Gorman faced a tougher opponent.  The first quarter went scoreless.  Both teams broke through in the second quarter, but it was Gorman who took the upper hand at 14-6 and retained its lead throughout the game.

It was sophomore Tate Martell who guided the Gaels this go around.  Martell completed eight of fifteen passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns.  On top of his passing, Martell also rushed the ball nine times for an extra 114 yards.

Booze had an excellent running game yet again, scoring three times on nine carries for 100 yards.

Nela Otukolo was a beast on defense, with nine tackles and six assists.  Junior Iken Okeke followed suit with eight tackles and two assists.

Gorman walked away with a 48-27 victory, proving dominate on both sides of the ball.

The Gaels have a long season ahead of them; however by continuing to play at their full capacity, they should see a very successful campaign go their way.
